Middle School

Competing in the middle school division gives you the chance to perform individually, get real feedback from experienced judges, and start building the confidence you'll carry all the way through high school and beyond.

Grade 7
Grade 8

High School

The high school division is where you represent your school, get seen by college coaches, earn individual scores and feedback, and compete for a coveted spot on Team Colorado to take the national stage in Las Vegas

SCORING BREAKDOWN

Here’s how scoring works for each division so dancers, coaches, and families know exactly what matters most on competition day.

10TH–12TH GRADE

All dancers in 10th–12th grade will compete in three categories that combine into one final score: Solo Routine (70%), Technical/Improv Spotlight (20%), and Interview (10%).

SOLO ROUTINE
70% of final score

Routine length: 1:30–2:00.
Scoring is based on:
• Technique – 30%
• Routine Content & Execution – 40%
• Performance – 30%.

TECHNICAL/IMPROV SPOTLIGHT
20% of final score

Length: up to 0:45.
Scored on the dancer’s technique, movement quality, and style.

INTERVIEW
10% of final score

Contestants will be provided an interview question to prepare an answer prior to entering the interview room (closed to public) and are given up to 0:45 to answer the question in front of a welcoming panel of judges. Scoring is based on answer content and delivery.

AWARDS 

At awards we will announce the Top 5 Interview scores, the Top 8 Spotlight scores, and the Top 10 Solo Routine scores. We will then announce the Miss Dance Team Colorado Top 3 winners and the Mister Dance Team Colorado Top 3 winners, which is a combination of scores from all three categories.
*Numbers may be adjusted higher or lower based on registration numbers.*

MIDDLE SCHOOL–9TH GRADE
SOLO ROUTINE

Length of solo routine is 1:30–2:00. Dancer will be scored on Technique (30%), Routine Content and Execution (40%), and Performance (30%). Dancers will receive their scores, along with their placement in comparison to others in their category following the competition. We will announce/award approximately the top 1/4 of each division.

DUO/TRIO
DUO/TRIO ROUTINE

Length of Duo/Trio routine is 1:30–2:00 in length. Scoring is based on Technique (30%), Routine Content and Execution (40%), and Performance (30%). Dancers will receive their scores, along with their placement in comparison to others in their category following the competition. We will announce/award approximately the top 1/4 of each division.

*Dancers in a Duet/Trio do not all need to attend the same school but all need to be members of their high school's dance team and must have permission from their Coach to compete.*

GUIDELINES

Please review these guidelines carefully so dancers, coaches, and families know what to expect on competition day.

Music
  • All music for routines must be edited to 1:30–2:00 in length. Please make sure lyrics are suitable for a middle and high school dance competition. Dancers will submit music electronically 1–2 weeks prior to the event.
Props
  • The use of small props is allowed. Please choose props that allow for quick set-up and take down and require minimal cleanup.
Costume
  • The contestant’s costume is left up to the discretion of the dancer and coach. The uniform must be appropriate for middle and high school age performers. Shoes are optional; dancers may perform in bare feet.
Choreography
  • Choreography can be created by a choreographer or by the dancer. All movement must be appropriate for middle and high school age performers.
